EVERY GRAIN OF SAND
1981年5月、ロサンゼルスで録音。

　ディランは言う。「この歌は霊感を受けてできた歌だ。少しも困難なことはなかった。どこからかやってくる言葉を紙に写しているような感じだった。 とにかく最後まで写したんだ。 クライディーが一緒に歌っている。 1回で録音したと思う。 クライディーは最高の歌手だ。 彼女が息をするのを聞くだけで背筋がぞくぞくする。声の質に特色がある。 深くて、 ソウルフルで、タフであると同時にとても繊細なんだ。彼女は電話帳を歌っても、聞く者を感動させることができる歌手だ。 この歌の最初の2行を初めて聞いただけで、とにかく彼女が言ったんだ。この歌はクラシックになるってね。100年たったらわかるだろう。 この歌は、時代の流れに遅れまいとするようなことは超越しているんだ。 時代に遅れまいとしたり、80年代の詩人であるとか、90年代のロックンローラーであるというようなこととは一切関係がない。 罠にはまってはいけない･･････あらゆることを学び、必要な時に呼び出せればいい。 古いやり方が、今でも一番役に立ち、窮地から脱することを可能にしてくれる。今はすべてのものが歪んでいる時代ですべてのサインは間違った方向を指している。 バベルの塔の時代に住んでいるかのようだ。あらゆる言語が混乱している。我々は金星に向けて塔を建てている。 一体それはどこにあるんだい。 何をそこで見い出すことができるだろう。 聖書には「愚か者でも口を閉じている時は、賢く見える」と書かれている。 聖書の言葉なんて言うと、すぐにそっぽを向いてしまう人がいる。なにか宗教的なものに対しては、 人は面と向かわないで、関係ないよと言わんばかりの顔をする。 「悔い改めよ。 天国は近づけり」というような言葉を聞くと、人は脅えてしまう。そんなことは避けて通りたいんだ。 誰かにその言葉を言ってごらん。 彼の敵になってしまう。 だけど、 事実に直面しなければならない時が来るし、 信じたくても、 信じたくなくても真理は真理であるという時が必ず来る。 人間の側で、真理にしたりしなかったりすることはできない。

人は誰も自分の真理を心に持っているという偽りが、多くの害をもたらし、人々を狂わせたんだ。自分の敵を征服するためには、まず最初に自ら悔 い改め、ひざまづき、あわれみを乞わねばならないということを聞いたことがあるかい。 ウェスト・ポイントではそのことを教えるかな。 神は傲慢な態度を嫌うんだ。現在の状況は、とても混乱している。人々は自分が誰であるかわからないように仮面をつけて、仮装して歩き回っている。このことだけは言えるーー誰かに自分の夢や希望を話す時は、その人が兄弟のように愛してくれているということだけは確かめておいた方がいいということだ。さもなくば、その夢や希望は、恐らく実現することはないだろう。生きのびるためには、少々迷信深いことも必要だ。 人はアメリカの新しいイメージについて語りたがるが、ぼくにとっては昔ながらのアメリカだ――マーロン・ブランド、ジェームス・ディーン、マリリン・モンローであっコンピューター、コカイン、デイヴィッド・レターマンじゃない。そういうものからは逃げ出さなければいけない。 ヘディ・ラマー、ドロシー・サンドリッジ、それがぼくのアメリカのイメージだ。 そして一体、誰がアメリカのイメージをよくしただろうか。 ある架空のくだらん兵隊が、空想上の外国で10万人の人間を殺すことだってありえる。でもそれは幻想にすぎず、長く続きはしない。人はもし選択することができるならば、今でもレット・バトラーになりたいと思うだろう。90年代には、あるいは21世紀には、人々は80年代はマスターベイションの時代であったと考えるだろう。しかもそれが極限まで押し進められた時代であったと考えるだろう。とにかく、どこを見てもそのような状態ばかりだ。 だからぼくはぼくの価値観を聖書の言葉に基づいて置きたいんだつまり変化することのないものの一部でありたいんだ。実際それはそれほど大変なことではない。 人は今でも、愛し憎しみ、 結婚し子供を産み、 心の中の欲望に隷属し、互いの顔面を張りたおしたり、あなた電気を消してくれない、 と言ったりしている。古代ギリシャの時代と全く何も変っていないんだ。何も変わっていない。 アブラハムが父親の偶像をこわしたのはいつのことなのか。 先週の火曜日だ。神は今でも審判者であり、 悪魔が今でも世界を支配している。 何も変化したものはない。 自分が重要人物だと考えているうちに、歴史は過ぎて行ってしまう。 まるで牧師のようなしゃべり方だね。世に出ようとしているソング・ライターやシンガ
一に言いたいのだが、今流行しているものはすべて無視し、忘れるようにした方がいい。 ジョン・キーツやメルヴィルを読んだり、ロバート・ジョンソンやウディ・ガスリーを聞いた方がよっぽどいい。 映画についても同じことが言える。 沢山の映画を見たが、心に残っているのはどんな映画だろう『シェーン』、『赤い河』、 『波止場』、『フリークス』、それにもう二、三本だけだ。 先日、 映画を見たが、終ったとたん、 その映画について何も思い出すことができなかった。 見ている時はとても重要なものに思えたんだが」

"That was an inspired song that came to me," said Dylan. "It wasn't
really too difficult. I felt like I was just putting words down that were coming
from somewhere else, and I just stuck it out. Clydie sings this with me, I
think it's a first-take thing. Clydie's one of the great singers ever, I get chills
when I hear her just breathe, something about the texture of her voice so
deep and so soulful, so tough and sensitive at the same time. She's one of

them singers that could like sing the telephone book and it would just put a
bolt through you. Anyway, she said that this would be a classic when she
a hundred years. About the song,
heard the first two lines. Maybe I'll know in
you have to get past the keeping-up-with-the-times stuff. It's not about
keeping up with the times, being a poet for the eighties, rock 'n' roller for the
nineties, you don't want to get trapped...you have to learn about it all and
call it up when you need it. The old trades are still the most useful, can get
you out of a jam. Everything is crooked now and the signs all point you the
wrong way-it's like we're living at the time of the Tower of Babel, all our
tongues are confused. We're building a tower to Venus. Where the hell is
that? What are we going to find there? God? The Bible says 'Even a fool when
he keeps his mouth shut is counted wise, but it comes from the Bible, so it
can be cast off as being too quote religious. Make something religious and
people don't have to deal with it, they can say it's irrelevant. 'Repent, the
Kingdom of God is at hand! That scares the shit out of people. They'd like to
avoid that. Tell that to someone and you become their enemy. There does
come a time, though, when you have to face facts and the truth is true
whether you wanna believe it or not, it doesn't need you to make it
true...That lie about everybody having their own truth inside of them has
done a lot of damage and made people crazy. Did you ever hear that to
conquer your enemy, you must repent first, fall down on your knees and beg
for mercy? Does West Point teach that? I don't know, I do know that God
hates a proud look. It's a messy situation. People are just out parading
around in disguises, wearing faces that don't let you know what they
think...I'll tell you this much-when you tell somebody your dreams and

hopes you better make sure they love you like a brother or your dreams and
hopes probably won't come true... You got to be somewhat superstitious to
survive. People like to talk about the new image of America but to me it's still
the old one-Marlon Brando, James Dean, Marilyn Monroe, it's not
computers, cocaine and David Letterman, we gotta get off that-Hedy
Lamarr, Dorothy Dandridge, that's my idea of America..... and who's
improved on it? Some phoney imaginary soldier can kill a hundred thousand
people in a foreign country of his own mind but it's a fantasy and it doesn't
stick-people, if they had a choice, would still want to be Rhett Butler. Maybe
in the '90's or possibly in the next century people will look upon the '80's as
the age of masturbation, when it was taken to the limit, that might be all
that's going on right now in a big way...I like to keep my values scripturally
straight though-I like to stay a part of that stuff that don't change. Actually
it's not that difficult-people still love and they hate, they still marry and have
children, still slaves in their minds to their desires, still slap each other in the
face, and say 'honey can you turn off the light' just like in ancient Greece.
What's changed? When did Abraham break his father's idols? I think it was
last Tuesday. God is still the judge and the devil still rules the world so what's
different? No matter how big you think you are history is gonna roll over you.
Sound like a preacher don't I? To the aspiring songwriter and singer I say
disregard all the current stuff, forget it, you're better off, read John Keats,
Melville, listen to Robert Johnson and Woody Guthrie. Movies too, I've seen
hundreds of them, how many of them stay with you? Shane, Red River, On
The Waterfront, Freaks? Maybe a handful of others...I just saw one the other
night, as soon as it was over, I couldn't remember a thing about it. Seemed
real important at the time though."
